Mama’s Ghost

they told me she is dead

and i couldn't believe

that grandma was gone

i even attended the funeral

and as we lowered the body

we said in unison

"for dust you are mama

to dust you return mama."

now she visits me

at night when alone

she laughs with me

and gives me a message

from my own ancestors

when i tell my folks

they say am possessed

possessed by a spirit

a ghost of mama

yesterday

they took me to their pastor

he said i need deliverance

he poured some oil

on my shiny forehead

and said it was holy

then started babbling

in a tongue i couldn't understand

i think he did incantation

and cast a spell on me

but it couldn't catch me

grandma still visited

last night when i slept

and promised to return tonight

now am eagerly waiting

for mama's ghost to return

    1. being a student of literature who comes from a strong christian background creates a tussle between religion and cultural traditions……which leaves me torn in between the two sides, so i try to show how these two forces are fighting each other

  1. Powerful poem. Truly, it is. However, if I may, I’d implore you to work more on your vocabulary and syntax. I like the subject matter of the poem. Let me invite you to read Pianos and Drums by Michael Okpara. Similar subject matter – in a way.

  3. I think we have something in common when it comes to writing poetry. Although, you are braver and you don’t stick to the rules. 🙂

Lately, I have been feeling like poetry is not something people enjoy anymore. Or maybe it’s just my poetry!! 😉

So, I am happy to meet you. And I believe you gave me good confidence in these days when I switched to Prose.

I have always felt stronger as I write. Hope you get to refresh your soul too as you write… to the end of time.

    God bless you Stephen.
